Galaxy Assembly

In celebration of the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, I created three art quilts to mark the occasion. Galaxy Assembly depicts the telescope arriving and setting up at the second Lagrange Point. One of its early missions will be to observe and study galaxies at all stages of development, from the epoch of first light through to the current time. Here I have imagined three vignettes of the imagery the telescope will transmit back to us.

Materials: silk, cotton, and wool fabric; silk, wool, and mylar fibers; glass seed beads and semi-precious stones

Techniques: hand-stitched patchwork, needefelting, quilting, hand beadwork

Size: 40”h x 40”w
